[a shaky moment as George readies the camera to catch her on the video, technology like this is unheard of in 2003]

So, uh. I've been told that I should get out more. Meet people. I'm not any good at that, so you're just gonna have to--bear with me as I figure this shit out. But I guess I've gotta bite the bullet sometime, right?

[she looks off camera and flushes slightly out of a combination of nerves and embarrassment]

Anyway, I'm George. I'm newish. I have--no fucking idea what I'm doing here. Does anyone? If you do, could you please fill me in.

It does suck! And thank you for saying so, 'cause I couldn't get my boss to understand that it did. Granted, he's so old, he probably reaped Jesus.

Anything where you don't have a choice kinda sucks. People forget that sometimes.

I think it's 'cause he's so old. He's so set on all of us doing what we're told, he's forgotten how to actually, you know, talk to people.

[Despite the topic of conversation, Jo smiles softly.]

Reminds me of someone I know.

[arches eyebrow slightly]

Yeah? What're they like?

He's old and grumpy and if you don't listen to him he gets even more pissed. [She smiles. She misses Bobby a lot, just like everyone else.]

Yeah, that sounds like Rube. Did your guy give you a nickname, too?

He just called us idiots. [That's about as close as it got to nicknames.]

...now that's a great motivator.

[Jo smiles softly.]

We deserved it. He wasn't our boss anyway.

I wouldn't say that I deserved it. Mason and Daisy, sure, but not me. [looks shifty] Not after the first couple of months, anyway.

[Jo laughs quietly.]

It's always the others, right?

Well, yeah. I mean, there I was, trying to hold down a job and getting to my reaps on time and there Mason and Daisy were, doing fuck all with their free time and stealing from the dead people and I'm the one who got shit on.

The troublemakers just don't care. [She shrugs, which probably isn't the nicest reaction.]

Your boss probably figured that out.

[looks vaguely indignant]

I didn't care, either. Okay, not much.

I did at first. Tried everything I could think of to get out of the whole reaping thing. Doesn't help that my first "assignment" was a five year old kid.

[Jo's face falls. She knows children die. She's seen bodies even. But...]

Damn, that must have sucked.

[George looks off camera for a moment, blinking rapidly, then she looks back]

...it did. I thought I did it. Y'know, saved her. But then I was told that her soul would go rotten if she didn't die, so. . . yeah.

[Jo shakes her head. She can't believe that, but it makes sense, in a weird way.]

I'm sorry.

[George bites her lip and is silent for a moment]

...me too. She was just a kid. She didn't deserve to die.

Most people don't.

[Doesn't mean it's going to stop, unfortunately.]

Yeah. I mean, most people I reaped just seemed [shrugs] ordinary. And the way they went was usually messy.

I had to reap murders, accidents, and suicides. The suicides were the worst. They'd always ask me to take it back.

[That's interesting.]

How did you reap a murder? Can they all see you?

They can all see us. Both before and after they die. And reaping a murder was the same as reaping anyone else. Get in, get the name, take the soul, and just . . .let it happen.

[Jo shakes her head. She can't imagine just standing back while someone dies. She wouldn't be able to do it.]

I couldn't do it.

[George had to do it for months before arriving here. it never really got any easier]

I didn't have a choice.
