I don't know what they were myself, but someone went swimming to find them. His illustrations did not paint them as having been human.

Given the way some of the furniture is shaped here, I should have guessed it myself.

Perhaps, perhaps not. I can only deduce from what the false gods have said and the state of the furniture that the previous inhabitants of this place were not like us. Then again, there are residents here now who aren't human, either. I suppose that Door of theirs makes no distinction.

So, why do they look human? The gods, I mean. D'you think maybe it's a disguise to make them more, I don't know, relatable?

I would assume as such, yes. If they can influence our wills and cloud our minds, then illusionary disguises are a simple feat.
