As it seems this place has stripped me of my students, I have decided I ought to find another one, perhaps two.

[On one hand, wow, what an opportunity; learning magic is one of those thing that almost all little kids, especially nerdy ones, dream about. On the other hand... Magic is, as far as Lance knows, not a thing in his world and he definitely doesn't have any experience with it. What if he wouldn't be any good at it? Could he even learn in the first place? What if he just wastes everyone's time?

...He supposes he could ask about at least one of those problems.]

Is it something that anyone has the potential to learn, or do you need to have at least some prior experience?

What is glyphcrafting? I am familiar with magic, but not with that term.

One of my previous students had no experience with it, and turned out to be quite talented in the art.

[There's a quiet sigh; he's apparently still lamented Emily's loss just as much as that day Dr. Sweets found him hurling plants around his garden.]

Not everyone has the natural inclination for magic, and some find themselves more skilled than others, but most from my world can learn it in some form or fashion, however little it may be. I'm not sure if it's the same for all worlds.

It's a rudimentary form of magic from my world that involves drawn glyphs and sigils, rather than spoken incantation or gestural methods, for casting. It's considered the easiest form to learn, but has the potential to be just as terrifying as the others in its own right.

[That's encouraging, though he doesn't miss the sigh and decides to address that first.]

I'm sorry that this student is no longer here; whether or not it might be best for them to have left, that doesn't make losing them any easier.

[And that said, back on the magic subject.]

Okay, then I guess it wouldn't hurt to apply.

[He hopes. But since Carlisle seems to already expect it won't be a waste of time but also is aware of the possibility, surely that's already factored into the idea of looking for new students.]

[He doesn't say anything more on Emily. Sans and Frisk were good students, the loss of whom hurts as well, but Emily was a friend, as well. Some wounds just don't heal.

But he can air his grievances to the doctor another time. That is his job, as Carlisle understands it.]

Unless you manage to stab yourself with your pen while filling out the application, no, it cannot hurt. And should that happen, you perhaps have problems that magic would merely complicate.

Ah, I see. That sounds a bit like the rune magic my mother was proficient in.

Did she not teach you such an art?

She taught me some, but in my world, some mages manifest a specific type of magic during a moment of emotional distress in childhood. It becomes more challenging to learn other forms of magic due to having a natural affinity for one type of magic over others.

Ah, I see. It's a bit like that where I come from with magicians, especially those who find themselves talented in evocation. They may be skilled in one school and command many elements, but they struggle to master other schools. It's a way you can tell the average mages from the exceptionally talented ones.

Mages can specialize in one area and still be regarded as exceptional in my world. Guilds have S-class exams, which test a mage's adaptability, problem-solving and combative skill. Some of the more dangerous work brought to a guild can only be taken on by an S-ranked mage who has proven himself or herself.

[Tests? Exams? For magicians? Carlisle was born into the wrong world, clearly.]

I am, yes.

[And an exceptional one, he's guessing, from the way she spoke of those S-class exams.]

And what do you specialize in, might I ask?

You sure it's a good idea to just let anyone learn?

[Glacius is sitting on the couch next to his partner, presumably to provide moral support as he knows neither the network, nor interacting with strangers in a dangerous cave, are Carlisle's favorite things to do. He remains silent as the clergyman makes the post and offers up the applications, but when he's done the alien loops an arm around him in a gentle hug.]

I am proud of you for reaching out to people in the interest of making this cave a better place. Just... don't extend yourself too much, alright? We still need to be careful. [Especially in light of recent discoveries, though Glacius doesn't mention that as he's not about to let it feel like it's weighing down his partner's capabilities.]

Uh, sorry to ask, but uhm... w-what is glyphcrafting, exactly?

[She realizes just asking a question out of the blue might also be rude, and she quickly adds--]

And I'm, uh, s-sorry about your students. Leaving, I mean.

Absolutely not, hence the applications.

[A quiet sigh this time. Still hurts.]

Glyphcrafting is a form of magic from my world, often considered the easiest of the forms to learn. Instead of vocal or gestural commands, one writes glyphs and sigils, then activates the dictated spell by pouring their energy into the glyph.

[Carlisle leans against Glacius, setting the communicator into his lap with a quiet sigh.]

I know, I know. I just... I believe having students gave me a sense of direction of which my life is in desperate need in this place.

I know you know--and this is a good idea, in case that needs reiterating. It contributes to the good in this place, and... it allows more people to discover how talented you are. [Glacius ruffles Carlisle's hair affectionately, but gently, then gets right to fixing it with his one intact mandible.] Just so long as it doesn't mean you stop teaching me, I'm all for it.

Now--are you feeling stressed about the purpose of your life again? Do we need to dig into that once more?

I suppose I will forever be bothered by the double-edged sword that is the nature of my affliction, especially now that we know more of how it affects me.

[And possibly others. He really doesn't like that thought.]

Perhaps if I'd never taken to healing, there would be more of me left, uneaten by this- this maw within me... but my work has been my life, devotion guiding me through dark times. I cannot imagine I would still be here without it.

[And his healing is one reason he and Glacius connected, are bonded as strongly as they are. Would he have that if he weren't a healer? If he weren't the himself he knows? There's too much uncertainty presented by the thought of other worlds, other times, other Carlisles -- he doesn't like the unknown, either.]
