[most people put on a hit list would lie low and avoid public notice.

not Margaery. she's not going to let the Null run her life and she has sewing shop duties to attend to.

this time, there's no fumbling with the phone, no going out of focus, Marg has successfully conquered her phone. and the sewing shop is dust-free and bolts of fabric can be seen in the distance]

[Nick sees this transmission, recognizes the name given by the network as someone on "the list," and makes a mental note to swing by the place on his patrol. His route already passes right by the building, and he's noticed it had activity going on behind its doors as of late -- must be the new management -- but never made a point of dropping in.

Well, he's got plenty of reason now, so when he makes a sweep of the city that afternoon, he knocks on the door and lets himself in. Frankly, he looks like he needed to visit the place sooner: his clothes are as tattered as the rest of him, with patches and raw stitches here and there. One arm on his coat even looks like it was crudely sewn back on after being ripped off with the limb underneath (which, of course, is exactly what happened).]

Anyone home?

[Margaery has been sitting in a corner, adding stitches to a teal colored garment. she looks up to greet her customer. his appearance is momentarily startling, but she's learning to recover quickly. she flashes a bright smile at the newcomer and gets up to go and greet him]

Yes! My name is Margaery Tyrell, Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. What can I do for you?

[Nick is used to the look folks give him when they first see him, but pleasantly surprised -- she covers it well. He meets her smile with one of his own as he gives her a polite nod.]

A queen, huh? Don't think I've ever met one of those. My name is Nick Valentine. I'm with the Guard and will be patrolling around here, so I mostly wanted to introduce myself so you didn't get spooked seeing me outside every now and then.

[well, she was raised to be a potential queen from birth and was well schooled in her courtesies]

One without her country and unlikely to return to it. It's a pleasure to meet you, Ser Valentine. I appreciate your efforts to keep us all safe, especially in this trying time.

[she bobs a neat curtsey]

[Or what they try to do. The gods, the Null, and the people in general don't make it easy.]

We have a couple of people guarding the clinic, but I figured if you're going to be working here, someone oughtta come by on occasion and make sure you're all right.

I would be grateful. I know that the Null want me dead but I won't let them run my life for me. Unfortunately, while I've had some lessons in swordplay, I'm well aware that I would do poorly against a truly determined assassin.

You aren't the only one. I'm betting the kids they put on that list aren't any better.

[Nick doesn't sound happy about that at all. Ellie might be okay, but from what he's seen of Duck on the network, he's betting he'd stand no chance against some of the more murderous in the city.]

No, likely not. Protecting them has to be our first priority. They don't deserve to be dragged into this war.

[Margaery hasn't even met either Ellie or Duck but still feels strongly that they need to be safe. trying to kill children sounds like something the Lannisters would do, and she's had her fill of such things]

No one does.

[But especially not kids and civilians, folks who need protection the most. Nick hasn't seen war personally, but he's lived in the aftermath of it for decades; he's had his fill of it, as well.]

You said you've had some lessons. You have a weapon?

[Margaery hasn't directly seen war or battlefields, but she's very familiar with the orphans left behind by war]

I have a sword. I'm still a beginner, though. Anyone with real combat experience would be able to overwhelm me quickly.

If you need more help with that, Henry gives lessons down at the Guard headquarters. He's taught me a thing or two.

[He tugs back the flap of his coat; he's got a sword under there himself. He wouldn't call himself an expert, but it beats being empty-handed when he runs out of bullets.]

Henry? I believe I met him in one of those odd shared dreams. He's a knight, is he not?

[guns are still a peculiarity to Margaery. they don't even have cannons yet in Westeros]

[That makes Nick smile just a bit.]

As close as you'll get to one in a place like this. He's a real character, but he means it when it comes to his honor.

Honorable men are rare. At least they were where I came from.
