Did someone lose this? [Nothing holds up a denim jacket, just his size, and probably a better choice than the dirty coat he has on at the moment.] It's not mine. This thing is awesome though so I bet one of you wants it back.

I'm not too far from the Spires. You can have it if you want. [Although if the way he's holding onto it suggests anything, it's that he doesn't want to give it up.]

I didn't lose it, but that is some jacket. Are you sure you wanna let it go?

[It's almost a relief to see someone dressed like they're going out back home, and Nothing smiles.]

I mean, if it's someone else's, they probably want it back.

[Laura smiles innocently and shrugs]

Finders-keepers? If you want it, it's yours.

[There's a fumble and the camera goes black for a moment as it's caught in fabric. When Nothing frees it he's modeling the new jacket, which looks crisp against his comparatively-dirty jeans and Bauhaus t-shirt.]

[she gives him an approving look]

Not bad. Not like we've got anywhere other than the Speakeasy to go to look good, though.

That's not stopping us.

That's true. Wanna hang out somewhere? I've got a couple of cigarettes left.

[She's dressed like she's heading to a club and she's offering Nothing cigarettes? She really is just like from back home.] Sure. I have some stuff too if you want some.

[it's been a while since she allowed Nighttime Laura out to play] Oh? What kind of stuff?

I'll show you. [He's smoked most of his weed and opium by this point but he's still got six tabs of acid. (Tripping is no fun alone.)] Where do you want to meet?

Sounds mysterious. I'll bite. [guess who's just coming down from one hell of a coke habit?] How about outside of the library?

Very mysterious. I'll be there.

[she makes it to the library and realizes she never got the name of her new friend]

Hey. I'm here. Are you?

[Who needs names to make a new friend? Nothing is there pretty quickly and waves.]

Yeah, I'm here. What do you want to start with?

[looks coy]

I dunno, what have you got?

[Reaching into his jacket pocket, Nothing palms his on-the-go stash and lets her see it: a nugget of pot, a foil-wrapped piece of opium, and an envelope of LSD.]

You pick. Whatever you're into. Or we can just smoke if you want. [He might have sounded a little overeager, but he couldn't help it. It had been a long time since he did anything as normal and comforting as hanging out and getting fucked up with someone. It endeared the girl to him and made his homesickness a little more acute.]

I'm Nothing, by the way.

[oooh, LSD. she's never actually had that before]

Let's try the LSD first. [she can hear the overeagerness and it's weirdly endearing. does he not have friends he can do this kind of stuff with here?]

Nothing, huh? Okay. My name's Laura.

Okay. Have you tripped before? [He asks this casually as he tears one of the tabs off the paper.] What have you done before, by the way? [Druggie talk was easy. He'd made most of his high school friends over it.]

Hi Laura. I like your dress. [Although, after he considers it a moment, he adds:] Are you cold?

No, I can't say that I have. [honesty was probably the best policy in this case] I've done cocaine, mostly. I tried pot a few times. And does alcohol even count? [she says with a laugh. Laura had to keep her drug use largely hidden back home, it didn't fit in with the image of the beloved homecoming queen image she cultivated]

Thanks. And I'm fine, my blood has always run hot.

[He chuckled a bit at her choice of words but offered a tab of LSD to Laura.] Put it under your tongue and suck on it. It'll kick in a little after the tab dissolves. And if you freak out I"ll be right here.

Alcohol doesn't count, [He smiles.] And neither does pot. I've never tried coke, though. Is it worth it?

[she takes the tab from him] Okay, sounds good to me.

Didn't think so. [she smiles back] And . . . yes and no. It worked great in the beginning. I was feeling no pain. But as I kept using it, I started having to use more and more to get the same effect. And the withdrawal was awful.

[she puts the tab of acid under her tongue]

[Nothing pops a tab under his own tongue and sucks his tongue, letting the paper dissolve slowly.] Just suck on it. It probably won't make you hallucinate, but things will seem more alive.

[He listens to what Laura has to say about the drug, frowning a bit when she describes the extent of her experience.] Sounds like I'll keep away from it, then. I'd rather have pain than withdrawal.

Hey, where're you from? [The question sounds sudden even to his ears and Nothing amends it.] I mean, you look like you're from close to where I am and when I am.

[she grins at him] I like anything that'll make me feel more alive.

[she nods] At first, it deadened my pain, but in the long run all it did was cause more pain. And I'm stuck dealing with the things that made me start using in the first place.

Me? I'm from Twin Peaks, Washington in 1989. How about you?

[He smiles back.] Me too.

Well, you don't have to deal with them today. Today you get to be alive.

1992. And New Orleans, I guess.

[her smile widens] Which is why you've got the good stuff.

Here's to that. Too bad we don't have any drinks, we could've made a toast.
