I've been stuck in my rooms for three days. I don't have words for how incredibly bored I am. I may well go mad.

So! In the interests of getting to know some of you better, let's chat. I have a question to start things off. What is one thing you wish people could know about you without you having to tell them?

For example, I wish I didn't have to explain that I am royalty. It's a bit awkward, and sounds like bragging, when really it's just the fact of who I was born to. So I'd choose that - or the fact that I prefer red wines to white. Then no one would ever have to worry about serving me the wrong thing. Actually, that one might be even more convenient.

What about you? At least some of you must be just as bored as me.

I think people often find it easier to blame themselves than otherwise. After all, they can control their own behavior. Perhaps they hope that if it's because of something they did, that means it's also because of something that can be easily fixed.

[Abigail nods. She feels the same way sometimes, wondering if she had brought out something bad in her father, and if so, that she can change it and have a better life.]

Yeah, that makes sense.

[She pauses.]

Why do you have to explain that you're royalty at all? Especially if it makes things awkward. This place is like a second chance. We don't have to be who we were in our old lives.

I think red versus white depends on what you're pairing the wine with.

I like who I was in my old life. I don't want to lie or pretend to be anyone else.

[It's a simple, honest answer.]

Being the prince is a part of me, and I think knowing that's who I am helps people to understand me a bit, just as I'll try to understand them in return.

[Abigail feels a twinge of jealousy. She's always wanted to be someone other than who she was as the shrike's daughter.]

That's a good idea. I wish more people would try to understand each other.

Do you feel like you were born with being a prince as part of you, or you were raised for it to become part of your identity?

It's hard to say. I don't believe I would be a different person at the core if I were born to different parents.

[He's quiet for a moment, thinking about it.]

But I was certainly raised to rule well and wisely. I was raised to be a good prince, moreso than a good person.

That's certainly different from how I was raised to be.

Is there a difference? Good princes aren't good people?

Not necessarily. Of course, we must be fair and honest, and as kind as possible, but a good prince - a good ruler - would put the good of the kingdom over anything else. That might end up hurting people, in certain cases.

But of course, it might not. It's possible to be both.

Hurting people like you might have to sacrifice some for others to live?

Like that, yes. And sometimes one must make choices that will hurt people one is close to.

That one's not limited to princes. People make those choices all the time.

That's true. And I imagine it's no easier for them.
