VIDEO | Backdated to the 10th

[ The video comes to life but there's no face on the other end, just a handwritten note along with a sloppy signature. Some may recognize the last name, others may not, but she honestly doesn't care. She has questions. She wants answers (despite the fact they likely don't have them all). And she desperately wants to find her friends.

The handwritten note is just precaution. She remembers the Null, even if her memory is fuzzy. Just as she doesn't sign it with her full name or tag it with her name. ]

Run down, please. We were underground and not cooking in the sun last I remember.

I could also use some help acquiring some sunscreen SPF... I don't know, whatever the fuck will keep me from turning into a tomato, and a pair of sunglasses.

Fear's not malicious enough to put us here just to hurt us. [ An act of desperation, however, and a few wrong moves, and maybe that's all he had left. A last ditch effort. It's too bad they're still fucking with them. ]

Silver lining. I hope people are stocking up.

I dunno. He seems pretty malicious to me. [Logically, yes. This was just a last ditch effort to get them away from the Null attack. But when Girl's latched on to being angry at something, logic is a hard sell.]

I'd imagine the smart ones are. But I don't reckon a lotta the folks here got a mind for survival.

He's desperate and thoughtless. [ She informs the girl before her expression sours a little. ] Those people are dumb, then. How many times do we have to be in a dire situation for them to start thinking intelligently?

Can't disagree with that. [She snorts.] A lotta people don't change 'til they got death lookin' in their eyes. But since death can be cheap here, it's not much of a motivation anymore.

Death isn't cheap here; the price of it is your eventual sanity. I don't think people have realized that yet, though. [ because remembering, that somehow ends up worse than actually dying. ] I know it doesn't seem that way but Hope can't heal our hearts and minds and we can only handle so much.

Price of your sanity? [That takes her off guard. People's attitudes led her to think there was little to worry about.] You mind tellin' me a lil' more 'bout that? Like, what it does exactly to your mind.

When we die, that's it. Death is an end to pain, to suffering, to joy, and to life. It's an important part of the cycle of life. [ She frowns, pulling her lower lip between her teeth as her brows pull down. It wasn't an easy thing to explain and, truthfully, some may handle it easier than others, but to Sharon, to relive after death is the most painful thing someone can do to another being.

Force them back up. Remind them that, just moments ago, they'd been dead. Sharon feels a rise of panic in her chest that she chokes down. ]

It's not like you forget dying when you wake back up. You remember every little bit like your mind decided to record your last moments in the most astonishing of details. The more that happens, the more you remember those horrifying, impossible things...

Don't you think that would eventually take a toll on your mental health?

[Girl starts to make a disagreeing noise, but cuts herself off to let Sharon finish in peace. Death hadn't been an end to anything for the Girl, just a continuation of misery until her spirit had been allowed back into the mortal plane. But she knows she had been a special case in her world. Maybe the people here were used to death equating to peace.

But what Sharon is telling her is familiar. The kind of familiar that she tries to keep shoved in a box in the back of her mind.]

I know it does. I just thought- well, I thought you meant it gave you something worse than the memories. Like that the gods would do something else, a punishment or something. The memories...I always thought that was just the price of coming back, no matter where you were from.

[She takes a breath and her voice becomes muffled as she sits back away from the device.]

Did no one ever came back from death in your world?

No, not that I'm aware of. It's possible, I guess, but nothing I've seen or heard of. People have survived what should have been death but that comes at a similar price.

Sometimes livin' can be the worse thing that happens. Dyin' is always the easy part.

But I'm guessin' your world must have been pretty bad if you talk about near death like it's so common.
