I have not had very much experience in preparing food in my life. It seems that such a thing would be a good skill to learn at this time. Is there anyone who could perhaps assist me in this endeavor?
[ Alfred is quick to answer the door and offers her a smile as he ushers her inside the apartment that he is sharing with Hvitserk. At the time, Hvitserk isn't home which probably will make learning much easier than if he had been there. ]
[she smiles back and comes in. she's carrying a bag which is holding spaghetti, canned pureed tomatoes, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and oregano]
Thank you for your kind welcome. Which direction is your kitchen?
[ Alfred is very grateful to have her here. He's been at a rather loss when it comes to food and figuring it out on his own hadn't gone very well at all. ]
This way. [ He indicates with a nod of his head and then leads her a short distance to it. ]
[ Alfred hasn't really heard of spaghetti before but he is guessing that it is probably a simple enough dish to start with and he nods at her explanation. ]
That seems to be a good thing around here. [ He's thinking that perhaps it's better not to depend on much of anything, actually. ]
[it's relatively simple as long as you can boil water and not burn the sauce]
Yes, it's unwise to get used to much of anything around here. After the attack by the Null, Hope was so drained he was unable to provide food for quite a while.
Why is it that a god is needed to provide food? [ He still doesn't fully understand this place he is in, clearly.
He motions with his arm and then leads her a little further in to where the small kitchen was. There was nothing special about it but everything about it is relatively unknown and foreign to Alfred. He and Hvitserk had not even tried to fathom what any of the things even do. ]
Because unfortunately, we're unable to provide our own. We don't have the seeds necessary to even start any kind of large scale agriculture and we'd need to figure out some means of irrigating the fields. This ground is far too poor for crops to grow easily.
[it was unknown and foreign to her, too, but she learned]
Thank you. I suppose I should have asked ahead of time, but do you have any pots?
[ Alfred frowns at the rather depressing confirmation that they do seem to be dependent at least for now. He wonders if it is possible to change that. It doesn't quite feel as such.
When she says so he moves to the cupboards near the stove and the first were empty but the nexts there were pots. He pulls out a couple, but he doesn't know what exactly she is needing. ]
[relying on the so-called gods as much as they do is unfortunate in Margaery's opinion. she doesn't have much faith in gods after her ordeal back home.
two pots (which he has), a can opener, cans of tomato puree, garlic and onion powder, oregano, olive oil, and spaghetti (which she brought in a heavy bag)]
That's perfect. [she sets the bag down on the countertop] I brought my own can opener, but you'll need to find one at the shops.
[ Alfred looks confused but he doesn't ask. He thinks that it will become clear on it's own as she sets things down. He peers at the bag curiously and the things that she had brought. Some of the items slightly more familiar than others. ]
[she starts pulling components out of the bag, showing him the can opener]
Yes. This is a can opener. You'll need it for many of the goods at the stores. Don't get the cans labeled as meat. There are rumors that it's tainted. If you can hunt, there are monsters on the outskirts of town. Many use them for meat.
[ Alfred furrows his brow. He'll remember about the cans, or he'll try to anyway. He had Hvitserk had talked about hunting before but they hadn't thought of monsters for eating. It seemed... wrong somehow. ]
[to be honest, Margaery isn't too comfortable with the idea, either. that's why what she brought is enough for a filling meal that doesn't require meat]
Many say so and I've yet to see any ill effects in them. However, I don't know how to properly butcher them.
[ Alfred furrows his brows. He's sure that Hvitserk will want to try and go hunting for monster meat then but hopefully the Viking would have some idea of how to butcher them since that is far beyond what Alfred could imagine. ]
I wonder if it is possible to eat such meat and forget what it is. [ He smiles a little and doesn't seem particularly keen on finding out. ] But, I suppose that doesn't matter just now.
[it's far beyond what Margaery can imagine, either. she'd been hunting with Joffrey a few times and he'd always had people along to do the actual butchery. Joffrey just liked to kill things]
I don't think I'd be able to ignore its origin. [she smiles back] No, what matters just now is getting this pasta and sauce ready.
[she hasn't touched meat since she arrived, almost seven months ago]
First thing is, you have to use the can opener to open the cans of pureed tomato. See? [she demonstrates how it latches onto the can, breaking the seal, then she opens the cans of tomato and empties one of them into a pot]

All right. [she follows him to the kitchen] I'll make spaghetti with tomato sauce. It's easy and you don't have to depend on having meat.

[ Alfred frowns. He doesn't like that idea, that they really don't have much of a choice but then again it is perhaps par for the course here. ]
I actually don't know... Where would they be usually? [ He really hasn't spent much time in kitchens in his life. ]

[and that's not mentioning the time after Hope was so drained, he couldn't provide food]
They're usually stored in the cupboards around the stove.
