[the video opens on George, sitting on the edge of her bed with her legs crossed. she looks curious, but also a little sheepish as what she's about to ask is . . . personal.

So, uh, I was kind of wondering. How many people here died before they came here? And how many are now immortal?

I was just. Wanting to know?

They really weren't. Reapers where I'm from have assigned ways to die. There's Plague Reapers, Natural Causes Reapers. . . I was assigned to Murders, Accidents, and Suicides. So pretty much all of the people who are gonna ask you to take it back.

[George's was a middle aged African-American man. he seemed nice enough. a little creepy about asking for her personal information to confirm that she was the one meant to die, but nice]

Nope. I died when I was eighteen. That was about a year ago.

「That sounds harsh, Atem's eyes soften at her predicament, no wonder why she wouldn't like it, but, someone has to do it. It's necessary.」

How did that... I mean... How's that you got to be who you are now?

[it was incredibly harsh. most of the people she Reaped seemed okay enough. so there were times when it felt closer to murder than anything]

Well. It turns out that Reapers where I'm from have a quota. A specific number of souls they have to take. No one knows what the number is, of course. And I was the lucky girl who filled the quota, so I got his job.

A quota...? 「Excuse him as he raises his eyebrows skeptically, that sounds... weird.」 How did you fill it?

Okay, say someone has to take one hundred thousand souls. Sounds like a lot, but there were Reapers I knew who were from the 1920s. I was number one hundred thousand, so he got to go to the afterlife and I was left behind to become a Grim Reaper.

she shrugs and tries to look casual]

I was just curious. . . wanted to know how many people were like me.

And I should probably introduce myself or something. I'm George. Hi.

「It truly doesn't look like nothing but curiosity and a need to relate to other people. He can understand that.」

Hey, George, my name is Atem.

「And a pause.」

Can I ask you something?

[George has always had a hard time relating to people. she's improved somewhat in her time at Hadriel, but it's still rough going sometimes]

Good to meet you, Atem.

[after the pause]

Sure? I mean, what is it?

「There is just another little pause as he hesitates.」

Does that meant you never got to go to the Afterlife?

...nope. Never did. Never will unless I go home and fill my quota. [she shrugs] It is what it is, y'know?

「Oh, well that is terrible.」

That sucks...

「And, that's that.」

[it is a little]

Yeah, kind of.

Don't get me wrong, here's been. . . good in a lot of ways, but I'm kind of in limbo.

Heh, you're not alone.

「That... should count for something.」

Yeah. There's that? Which helps.

Maybe Lup's idea for a club could work?

You know? I had thought about that before. It was mostly a joke but, maybe it would help.

Yeah. I mean, who's gonna understand our weird shit better than each other? Or, y'know, be able to sympathize?

「But who wants to talk about that? He's not sure he wants to, really.」

[she does understand that this is a sensitive subject]

「He doesn't want to make a huge deal of it either... Mixed feelings, etc.」

Well, when you put it that way. . . you'd be welcome whenever. Even if it's just, y'know, one on one conversations.

「Then he leans over the phone, as if he were to tell her a secret.」

[she's pretty when she smiles. even prettier when she tries to dress up. problem is, her self-esteem is so low, she never sees the point in trying]

He smiles at her. She's cool, following his stupid jokes and all.」

Hey, are you like Ravine too...? Not needing to drink or eat?

[she would blush like hell if she was told that.

and she likes him a lot. he's nice, he's funny, he didn't take offense at her really personal questions. all of those things means that he's someone she's going to want to spend more time with in the future]

I like to, but I don't have to, no. During the weeks of the Null attack, I spent the whole time in the Clinic with no breaks.
