A Grim Reaper takes the souls of those who are going to die and seeing 'em off to the afterlife. Everyone gets a particular cause of death. Mine was murders, accidents, and suicides. So basically all the people who are guaranteed to ask you to take it back.

What the fuck, honey. Shit. A real Grim Reaper. Thought that was always just a damn made up story. You got stuck with that, for the rest of...whatever? There's no way out of it?

I wish it was a made-up story. And nope, no way out of it. I was the lucky millionth soul taken by another Grim Reaper, so I got stuck with his job and he got to move on to the afterlife.

So you're stuck in between. Forever? Shit. That's a real fucking nightmare. No heaven or hell or whatever the fuck comes after, just stuck taking souls. I'm real fucking sorry, honey, that's a hell of a bad break.

Yeah, forever. Don't get me wrong, it has its upsides. But the downsides involve watching some truly nasty ways to die and a 24/7 work schedule with no days off. And. . . thanks. I've adjusted. Mostly. Being sent here kind of hit the pause button on my reaping days.

It sounds pretty fucking grueling. So what are the upsides?

That's because it is.

The upsides are, I can heal anything, even something that would kill an ordinary human. I don't technically have to eat, sleep, or breathe. And I'm never going to get any older. Or gain any weight. Which is nice.

Too bad you can't share a little of those perks. Do you ever miss feeling tired or hungry, or nah?

[ It could be nice not to ever have to eat or sleep, but he wonders if you'd miss those sensations after a while. ]

I guess? Most people wouldn't like the trade-off, though. And I try to keep a "normal" [she makes finger quotes] eating and sleeping schedule. So I don't weird people out.

[ In all of this discussion about being a Grim Reaper, though, something's been overlooked on his end, and the tone of his voice changes a little, softer now. ] You mind me asking what happened to you? So there I was, on my lunch break from a truly lousy temp job and the seat of a zero-G toilet seat kind of. . . landed on me. And I exploded.

[she looks like she's bracing herself for laughter]
