Okay, I guess I'm a little overdue for this-

My name is Quentin Coldwater. I'm a magician. I used to teach at Brakebills, and for a while, I lived in Fillory. I've got a pretty good grounding in physics and mathematics, and interuniversal travel. Normally I would consider myself able to claw my way out of this shit, but no dice this time.

Right. [she considers a moment] I guess I've always kind of gone with the flow. Quit school at eighteen, got hired at the very first club I walked into. Met a man there and we lived together until I was twenty. Then he got controlling and mean, so I took the money I made and went to London. [her voice turns rueful] And that's when I met Dan.

Who's Dan?

[Lifting his eyebrows at this new name.]

Ex?

[not just any ex, the ex. the one who broke her heart once, then mended it when he came back to her, and the one who made her choose to fall out of love with him just before Jane came here]

Yeah. One of many. [a lie] How about you? Got any exes we should watch out for?

Just Alice. And if she turns up here it'll be a relief. She'll have us out of here in a heartbeat.

[Warm, utter faith.]

Yeah? She's that good?

Better than.

Anyways, if you see her, tell her I'm here.

Will do. But I'll need to know what she looks like.

Ash blonde, pin straight hair, glasses. About 5'3 and maybe 130? Soft face, very light blue eyes. Knock your socks off beautiful.

[Says Quentin, with a tiny little smile.]

One of those 'inner light' kind of people.

[she listens to the description with a slowly growing smile]

Of course.

[He doesn't protest.]

[the smile fades and she shakes her head]

You should never get hung-up on an ex. It always leads to trouble.

It isn't like we broke up because we went to different colleges. She got killed saving my life.

And you brought her back. I remember. Did she. . . say anything about wanting to get back together?

There wasn't time. We were in an apocalypse, then I was here.

We'll talk about it when I get back.
