Okay, I guess I'm a little overdue for this-

My name is Quentin Coldwater. I'm a magician. I used to teach at Brakebills, and for a while, I lived in Fillory. I've got a pretty good grounding in physics and mathematics, and interuniversal travel. Normally I would consider myself able to claw my way out of this shit, but no dice this time.

Is there anyone here who knows anything about any or all of the above?

[He pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose, a nervous habit.]

I would like to get the fuck out of here, if anyone has any, uh, inroads on that one. Novel, I'm sure, but we've all got to start somewhere. Cheers.

What about you? Were you living a nice, normal life before you got here?

[ Far from it, though she won't go into any of the details. ]

I don't imagine many here had 'nice, normal lives' before. At least, not from all the stories I've heard.

That's what I'm picking up on, yeah.

I wonder why we turn up here in such disproportionate numbers?

Some would blame the Door, if it truly has the power to choose. Or the gods, who say they have no influence.

[ It has to be one or the other, though, because it's too hard to believe that it's a coincidence. She's inclined to believe that it's the gods... ]

Maybe we're particularly emotionally- vibrant?

If we're a food source, you can see why we're not like- farmers and stock brokers.

I'm sure that farmers can be just as emotional as the rest of us. [ She has no idea what a stock broker is. ] I imagine their lives are exciting enough in their own way.
