So everything has sucked recently. Back home in Montana, when shit got rough we'd always get together and have a big bonfire. Get drunk, make s'mores, all that stuff. It didn't make things better but at least you forgot about it for a little while.

Worth a try right?

[He sounds like he's honestly asking. He's trying really hard to be positive for once.]

I've got some graham crackers, chocolate, and other things for roasting. No marshmallows though so if anyone wants to come through in the clutch it would be appreciated.

I'm lighting this up tonight at dusk, so if you want in, be there. I've only got so much to burn and it might not last more than an hour or two.

Yes. It is. [she sighs] Honestly, I don't know what came over me, usually I'm able to resist better than what I did.

Judging from what everyone else has been saying it was something these fake gods did. Something about blowing up Fear's temple triggered it.

Mmm. The so-called gods. They're not happy unless we're all miserable, at each other's throats, or worse.

Well we're their batteries. You'd think they'd take better care of their livestock but..

[He snorts, he doesn't really want to think about them when he's trying to enjoy his roasted sugary treats.]

Least it's over for the moment. Until we wake up tomorrow and something else batshit happens.

But they're incapable of even the smallest social niceties, let alone taking care of us.

Well, while it's over, let us try to enjoy ourselves while we can! It means more when it's not provided by them, but pulled together through our own efforts.

Shove it in their faces that we don't need them for everything.

[bright laughter] I like the way you think. These so-called gods have far too high an opinion of themselves.

Because they know we need them for survival. It makes them smug.

Insufferably smug. As Queen, I had to deal with smug courtiers all the time and these so-called gods out-do even them.

Can't you pull rank? I feel like a queen is above a pretend god. Or should be anyway.

[Not that he expects them to respect that, but it would be something at least.]

It is. It's true, they've brought many people out of unfortunate circumstances back home--my own, for example--but they do little to endear themselves to us with their highhanded manner of speaking to and dealing with us.

Some people yeah. I'm close to being dead so you'd think this would be an improvement, but I'm not really sure it is. It's delaying the inevitable and I might be murdered by robots while feeding fake gods with my emotions. So.. not too much of an upgrade.

But surely you can at least try to petition for relocation elsewhere? That's what I'm doing and I see no reason to be denied. I'd be going to an entirely different world, one which never had me to begin with, so one would think they could make similar accommodations for you.

I thought you were a queen? Why do you wanna go somewhere else?

[she sighs] I was. I was also murdered by my--I suppose the terminology which would fit is mother-in-law. So I've nowhere else to go. Besides, I fell in love with a man from Earth while he was here and he asked me to join him. I've stitched his name and address into all of my undergarments, just to be on the safe side.

I'm sorry. That.. well that sucks.

Though that is some high level romance movie stuff. I hope you're able to find him.

[Something about having someones name and address on all your underwear is so highly amusing to him. Something that's probably in those drug store romance novels he might have thumbed through once or twice out of curiosity.]

As do I. I've been striving to be ready to be with him again ever since he left. I know that I will be in for a great deal of culture shock.

[it's a pragmatic thing: she's heard rumors that going through the Door mucks with one's memories. she'd rather not be stranded on a foreign planet with no leads as to where to go]

It won't be that bad. Depending on where he is on Earth anyway... and when I suppose. Hopefully he's from after there's showers and indoor plumbing.

I lived without showers and electricity and phones for many years, but he's from 2017. I should be able to adapt to the technology without much trouble. It's the part where I'll have to adapt to being one woman out of millions that concerns me.
