[ His experience of people caring for each other is so fucked up and it is all because he picked the worst role models in the world as far as feelings go. Really. Nobody would put "Winchester" and "functional romantic" in the same sentence.

So Cas just pauses thoughtfully, understanding that the tone in Sam's voice is discomfort, and he gives a reply which his device turns into something else with a similar meaning: ]

( the winchesters have never been anything short of emotionally constipated - dean more than himself, but it's all the same - and with the chance to have something that he's been consistently denied for as long as he can remember, there is always going to be a a part of him that doesn't quite ... know what to do with it all.

there's a soft, almost-not chuckle and a shake of his head that cas won't be able to see, of course, but the amusement is back in his voice as though it had never left. )

( the intent behind all of this - he knows it's nothing but good - and even though the other's device isn't helping the seriousness of the situation, he appreciates it. if anything, it lightens the embarrassment at having the whole thing out in the open for everyone in the city to see, to hear, even if it's at his own expense.

kate is pretty awesome. he can't deny that.
