(He is deep within one of the adjoining caverns, holding a lamp aloft. It's totally understandable if you have never seen anything quite like it. He is a crafty Elf.)

No one seems to have a thirst for mining ore. Is it an uncommon practice in other worlds?

(He sets down the lamp and lifts up a pick-axe, bringing it against the rock wall in a precise manner. The stone gives away, cracking and revealing something that...shimmers...underneath. He runs his hand over it, curious.)

Some call this a hellish land - and perhaps that is so - but we are within this planet's womb. I should like to see what treasures can be unveiled.

He did! (He smiles brightly at the memory, chipping - carefully - around the new material.) The Doors were not made overnight.

This... [He shifts the lamp towards the shiny stone. It almost looks opalescent in quality and is that...a faint glow?] I am taking as many samples as I can carry!

‘Tis not so much a lack of wanting to mine, but rather there’s a peril that waits in those tunnels! At least that’s my take on it.

[ Still, it was astonishing to see someone actually dig up something pretty in this city! One would think they’d have a forge somewhere, if ores were truly so near. ]

[ He huddled away, wherever he was. It felt so odd to hear a scene from the caves unfold from the safety of the city’s buildings. Technology! ]

[ A smile comes over Curufin's face, to see his son engaged in this work. Both because he is doing what he has a passion for, and because he is well enough to do it -- Elrond has helped him a lot! ]

I haven't heard of anybody but us attempting to dig the treasures of the earth out of this asteroid or whatever it is. Have a care to keep your sword handy at all times, as you may find sometimes that you have company from curious or hungry tunnel creatures.

[ He looks curiously at the shimmering mineral. ] What do you think that is?

(Elrond has given him a new lease on life. Already, his muscles are strengthening to support the weaker, scarred parts. He cannot be freed of what Sauron did to him, but he lives.)

Care to join me? (His smile flashes in the light.) I am attempting to be quiet, but we shall see, hm?

(He shifts and reveals a pair of sharp daggers along with his sword.)

A gemstone, I would guess. It does not feel like metal. (But materials can be mixed - as they well know.) I shall bring it back for us to test.

[ And it is Curufin's great delight to see how the life flows back into his son's battered body, how he moves now with so much more ease -- and so much more joy. ]

[ He sees the daggers and the sword. ] Well, you have come well-prepared!

[ And he quickly puts away his current project, picks up his weapons, and goes out of the forge-shack's door and into the woods. He keeps the phone in his hand and the connection open. ]

I may be a dwarf and all, but mining's not really my thing. You'd need the Miner Caste and all their expertise.

I guess it's worth asking, though: find any lyrium? Blue, glowing veins?

I belong to such a caste, though I know that is an oddity for Elves. (He is like his grandfather and, as such, Celebrimbor has delved deep into the Earth, searching, mining and learning.)

I cannot say I have as of yet, but I will look for it. What does it do?

Huh, I just thought caste was a dwarven thing. A really stupid dwarven thing.

It's a mineral that mages use to boost their power, but it's also pretty dangerous in its raw state, if you're not a dwarf. Even then, that resistance is only skin-deep. For anyone else, just touching it can seriously mess you up in more ways than one. The Miner caste is the only group that knows how to mine and process it safely, into something less dangerous and more useful.

...so I guess it's more a warning than anything else, because I sure as hell don't know how to do any of that.

I do not think I can easily name it. I need a clearer picture of the make of it to even venture a guess.

(But he is excited at the prospect of researching.)

We might have the right equipment in the lab to do some tests. Might be able to figure it out that way. I'm really curious to see if it's something I already know, or if it's something new all together. Ah, I'm an alchemist, so the idea of having something totally unknown to work with is pretty exciting.

We might be the first to name it! If there is any metal in it, it can be melted down and put to use.

Not where I come from. Mining rights and corporations wanting to mine have either helped things or caused a lot of trouble on different worlds.

[Luke will be ok as long as they don't find Spice...that stuff's always causing trouble back home.]

Politics ruin so many crafts. (He tuts and continues to hammer.) I would not have found Mithril under those constraints.
