[the video opens on an awkward looking teenage girl, sitting cross-legged on a bed, wearing a tank top and a pair of shorts. she's holding a sheathed sword in her lap.

finally, she speaks]

Okay. I'm looking for someone to teach me how to fight. Fist-fighting, martial arts, swordfighting, guns, I don't care. I'm just sick of everyone else fighting my battles for me.

We've got that, too. Like a group of friends listening to something at a party or going to a concert. [not that she would know about either of those things in person]

I can't even imagine it. They must have so many stories to tell when they been kickin' that long.

Mmm. See, that's the way I'm used to it. Listenin' alone just seems kinda, you know, lonely. [She's spent many years with just her, the cat and a busted up boombox so she feels that deeply.]

I guess so. My Grandma Phyl was kinda cool. Acted like a woman half her age, though maybe that was because of yoga and organic food.

I don't like to think of it as lonely. More like . . . private?

Not sure what yoga is but that's pretty shiny. Most of the old people I've met acted old. 'cept D. But I figured that's how he lived so long. [To that magical 40]

Are you, uh, embarrassed 'bout the music? [Why else would it be private?]

[she sits the phone down so she can back away from it and demonstrate a basic extended triangle yoga pose]

Yoga's this. And other stuff like this. [she gets out of the pose, then picks up her phone again] Still blows my mind that old is so, well. Not old by my world's standards.

No. No, it's not that. It's just. I'm bad at people.

Okay? [That just looks weird. But she thought that about some of Kobra’s “karate” stances too and knew better than to question it.] Is it a fightin’ thing? And old, well, kinda freaks me out too. I didn’t even think people could live that long.

Oh. [There’s a long pause.] Is it a crowd thing?

It's supposed to be a relaxing thing. Becoming one with the universe or whatever. That's how it was explained to me, anyway. And they can. Usually have to take a mouthful of pills, but they can.

No. It's just a people thing. I'm bad at--interacting with 'em.

Pills. [She says it like she's spitting venom.] That doesn't sound worth it to me.

I get that. Not very good at it myself. Though you seemed pretty good at dealin' with me when we met.

I guess not. 'Cause the pills all have side effects and then they have to take pills to counter the side effects.

--oh. Well. Thanks?

[she is unused to compliments of any kind]

Ugh. No thanks. Any pills at all sound shit. Takin' more to get by from the last round just sounds like a hell cycle.

You're welcome? I just meant, you know, you're good at hidin' it.

It kinda does, doesn't it? I guess I got lucky, dying when I did. I get to avoid all of that shit.

Yeah, hidin' that you don't like people. Couldn't really tell when you spoke to me, you know? [There's an awkward pause.] It's just a compliment.

It's the only way I've got. Otherwise, I'll drive myself crazy.

Oh. Well. It's not that I don't like people. I'm just--bad at relating to them. Usually. [a pause] Thanks?

Whatever gets you through the night. [She murmurs it like she's repeating a mantra.] You probably got the right of it, lookin' at the bright side.

No that, uh, that I get too. [She feels this is getting awkward.] Welcome?

Pretty much. And it's all night. And I dunno if it's the bright side. It's the safest side.

Okay. Cool. [yes, maximum awkward]

Nothin' wrong with safe.

Um. Yeah. [So. Awkward.] So, uh, good luck in findin' someone to teach you.

I've found. That it's usually best to be safe.

[oh God, so awkward. so very, very awkward] Yeah. Thanks? I'll probably need it?

It's not 'bout here but it wasn't something I started a long time back. More of a thing from the weeks before I got kidnapped to this place.

...what made you decide to, y'know. Change?

[She sighs in frustration, trying to find a way to put it into words.] It started with revenge.
