So uh... Hey everyone. Again.

I know like, a bunch of people just arrived so... Welcome, I guess. We're still working on the newbie's guide to waking up in a cave-city run by gods, but until then like, if you have any questions I can try and help? Also uh, it's probably safe at this point and we're just being paranoid, but you may want to avoid eating any meat products you find here. For reasons.

Also uh, sort of related, but I was thinking that maybe before next month we should really... Plan some way to help out? I mean, people just sort of show up and half the time there's monsters too, and... Maybe some sort of organized thing for helping the new people not get like, eaten or whatever would be a good idea.

[This is not exactly his area of expertise, so if other people want to take charge on this he's more than happy to let them, but otherwise he'll try and figure something out. It really seems like something important to get established.]

In uh, a rare moment of good news though, the whole coffee thing worked out. So if you want coffee there's some at Delight's bar now, though you'll have to like... Be kind of patient with me and the others being possibly terrible baristas. Still kind of getting the hang of the whole thing.

[But surely coffee itself is well worth any less-than-practiced customer service; they're at least pretty good at making coffee, including somewhat elaborate drinks, and as far as Chris is aware they're all trying. That's what counts, right?

I think that's about it, except for that like... If anyone's curious, the handheld games from the arena this month are just normal games. I thought maybe they'd be some sort of weird alien-versions of them, but I guess not; I took one apart and it was all the expected stuff inside it.

That said I'm totally betting I can beat anyone's high scores.

You've got the big stuff, mostly. There's uh, there's four gods here right now: Hope, Fear, Rage, and Delight. They get energy from us feeling whatever emotion they're named after, and so they do stuff to try and make up feel those emotions, so that's uh... A thing to be aware of.

Also Hope brings people back to life when they die.

[He's actually getting pretty used to people asking him this, or some variation of it.]

Not yet.

[Hopefully never, but he's too realistic to think that's likely.]

Sure. I mean, um... There's some really bad stuff that's happened here, but some stuff's been pretty good too. Depends which god is screwing with us.

[He pauses a moment, trying to decide how to explain.]

Usually they do like, one or two things a month, and we're uh... Due for one here soon. The last thing that happened was a few weeks ago; Rage made almost everyone want to kill each other.

[It had been a whole mess.]

Delight's only been here for a little while, but she threw a party and gave us some mood-lifting fireflies, which sounds stupid but was pretty awesome. Hope uh, kind of isn't great at actually inspiring hope, but he tries.

[Poor Hope. And okay, as for Fear...]

Fear um... He buried like, half the people here alive for three days, so that was a thing.

At least not like, a way out of here we can control. People do leave, though; they just kind of... Disappear.

Well, the city's like... Surrounded by these really complicated caves full of monsters, and people have tried exploring them but uh... No luck.

[Chris hasn't been to them himself, for a whole bunch of reasons; some of the reasons are really good, like being injured, and others--like that the whole thing sounds terrifying--are not as good.]

We're all usually pretty distracted by whatever's going on because of the gods, though.

[He nods also in response.]

I've seen Delight in person, and talked to Hope and Fear; Rage has been on the network but I've never talked to her.

[Yeah he's seen that look on a few people's faces here, but he won't mention it. He'll just hope Shadow thinks it over carefully before messing with any of the gods.]

Yeah, they're all from Hope. I pretty sure he made the phones at least; I think he does all of it but maybe one of the others is helping him now.

Practicality, mostly? Also we're not like, generally too worried about powering up Hope or Delight compared to Rage or Fear, if it even works that way. I know it takes power from Hope to like, make the electricity work--before the generator, anyway--so it might take power for the phones, too.

[He actually hasn't thought too much about the impact of using the phones, really.]

We've been using them the whole time, so they're kind of the least of our worries here.

[He frowns a little at the last comment.]

There's like, a big difference between trust and just... Using what we've got.

Yeah, but I mean... It's good to be suspicious. And like, we've kind of just gotten used to a lot by now, so... There's probably stuff we just overlook at this point.

[So even though he's not a big fan of accusing any of them blindly trusting the gods, some suspicion from people that aren't totally jaded about this place yet is definitely a good thing.]

Yeah, so I've heard.

[He never thought he'd be exemplifying it so much, though.]

So um... Stop me if I'm being like, rude, but you're uh... Obviously not human, yourself?

[And he's really curious about that.]

Yeah, I try.

[But okay, he doesn't seem offended, so. He still won't ask 'What are you' because there's no way that isn't rude, so instead...]

So are there like, lots of different uh... Beings, where you're from? Back home it's basically just humans, unless you count like, dolphins or whatever; they're super smart but they can't talk to us, so we're not totally sure how smart.

[And he's rambling. But basically Shadow seems to know what humans are, so are there multiple types of intelligent beings where he's from?]
