So uh... Hey everyone. Again.

[He could probably get a better opening line, but whatever. Moving on.]

I know like, a bunch of people just arrived so... Welcome, I guess. We're still working on the newbie's guide to waking up in a cave-city run by gods, but until then like, if you have any questions I can try and help? Also uh, it's probably safe at this point and we're just being paranoid, but you may want to avoid eating any meat products you find here. For reasons.

Also uh, sort of related, but I was thinking that maybe before next month we should really... Plan some way to help out? I mean, people just sort of show up and half the time there's monsters too, and... Maybe some sort of organized thing for helping the new people not get like, eaten or whatever would be a good idea.

[This is not exactly his area of expertise, so if other people want to take charge on this he's more than happy to let them, but otherwise he'll try and figure something out. It really seems like something important to get established.]

In uh, a rare moment of good news though, the whole coffee thing worked out. So if you want coffee there's some at Delight's bar now, though you'll have to like... Be kind of patient with me and the others being possibly terrible baristas. Still kind of getting the hang of the whole thing.

[But surely coffee itself is well worth any less-than-practiced customer service; they're at least pretty good at making coffee, including somewhat elaborate drinks, and as far as Chris is aware they're all trying. That's what counts, right?

Right?]

I think that's about it, except for that like... If anyone's curious, the handheld games from the arena this month are just normal games. I thought maybe they'd be some sort of weird alien-versions of them, but I guess not; I took one apart and it was all the expected stuff inside it.

That said I'm totally betting I can beat anyone's high scores.

A useful idea. Perhaps, at this new coffee bar we can also serve tea for the newcomers, if they do not wish to drink coffee? [Since Liquid was British and was practically brought up on the stuff.]

I'm no tea server but I do agree on choice for everyone here, since the gods don't really give us much in the way of choice. [Such as being attacked by monsters and burning flies.]

Wouldn't be so quick to throw that out there, buddy. Not when you don't know who you could be dealin' with.

[ York was totally the champion of random old arcade games on the Mother of Invention. Possibly because it was a military ship and absolutely no one wanted to dick around with stupid old video games except for York, but whatever. Still totally champion. ]

[ He's sitting alone, in the quiet, in the dark, and fiddling with the device is enough to catch his interest, especially when another face appears.

He murmurs, softly, puzzled: ]

Why would you want to beat anyone's high scores?

[He's not one to help complete strangers unless he either felt like it on a whim or found something in them useful for either entertainment or satisfaction of something he needed at the moment so he'll ignore that bit.]

Is it decent coffee? I only ask because I am use to decent coffee. [And he has high standards while playing a noble.]

I never had much time for games. Having it not on a board is rather new to me as well.

You do remember there's a veteran barista in your midst, right?

[These people. Prattling on about coffee and video games when there's something much more important to ask about.]

What reasons?

[Ew, tea. Okay, Chris really doesn't have much of an aversion to the stuff anymore since for awhile it was all they could find here and some caffeine is better than no caffeine, but otherwise it really isn't something that crosses his mind much.]

Delight takes requests, so you can always ask her, but you'll probably have to trade her something for it.

[In other words, not a bad idea but one that's probably up to Liquid to handle.]

[Hm, someone whose voice he doesn't recognize, so probably a newcomer. One who clearly has the best priorities; Chris approves.]

Hey, the worst that could happen is I'm wrong, and every once and awhile that happens.

[Chris is not actually that practiced with the handhold games, but it's not like they're super complicated so he's catching on fast. And he's rather challenge someone and lose than do nothing but wait for the next awful thing to happen here, so overconfident declarations on the network it is.]

[He's getting pretty used to people who don't understand videogames--or other things, for whatever reasons--so he takes a moment to consider how to explain.]

It's just kind of a fun competition, especially when it's usually either awful or boring around here.

Yeah; Em made pretty sure of it being really good coffee.

[And Chris had been totally happy to go along with that. Bad coffee is better than no coffee, but good coffee is way better than both.]

Unfortunately there's like, kind of a lot of time here to fill, in between whatever terrible shit is going down.

[And the occasional nice shit, like the fireflies. That had been a pretty great event.]

So does that mean I can ask you pointers on how to make a whatever fancy fake-italian name drink someone might want?

Uh, the gods sort of... Put human meat in our food supply a few months ago. Just so happened monster spirits that possess people who engage in cannibalism showed up at the same time, so it was a whole... Thing.

[And that's a really, really casual way to put it, but thankfully he's had to explain this a lot by now and so he can do it without thinking too much about it.]

Trade, hm? I had no idea you had to trade something in order to gain something in this place. I'm not sure what I could trade her. [Would it be that difficult for tea to be placed on the menu?]

Perhaps, I could reason with her and see what happens in the outcome? [Since he was a man of reason and Delight seemed to be a nicer god than Fear.]

It was mostly Emily's idea, to be fair.

[Actually he really can't remember if it was his or Emily's idea, but the final thing had been a joint project so she deserves credit here also.

And that next comment gives him pause a moment.]

Um... I don't think so. I think a lot of people are worried about getting eaten.

[And until recently the chronic injury to his leg made that even more of a risk for him to willingly go near monsters considering he probably couldn't run away if necessary.]

[ He's technically been here a month! But he hasn't really talked to many people, so sure, newcomer it is. ]

Well I'm a guy who's most of the time almost always never wrong, and allow me to submit that I could absolutely crush you at game-of-your-choice.

Really? I'd formed the impression the vagaries of our gods would ensure we all got eaten on a semi-regular basis whether we leave our homes or not.
