I know like, a bunch of people just arrived so... Welcome, I guess. We're still working on the newbie's guide to waking up in a cave-city run by gods, but until then like, if you have any questions I can try and help? Also uh, it's probably safe at this point and we're just being paranoid, but you may want to avoid eating any meat products you find here. For reasons.

Also uh, sort of related, but I was thinking that maybe before next month we should really... Plan some way to help out? I mean, people just sort of show up and half the time there's monsters too, and... Maybe some sort of organized thing for helping the new people not get like, eaten or whatever would be a good idea.

[This is not exactly his area of expertise, so if other people want to take charge on this he's more than happy to let them, but otherwise he'll try and figure something out. It really seems like something important to get established.]

In uh, a rare moment of good news though, the whole coffee thing worked out. So if you want coffee there's some at Delight's bar now, though you'll have to like... Be kind of patient with me and the others being possibly terrible baristas. Still kind of getting the hang of the whole thing.

[But surely coffee itself is well worth any less-than-practiced customer service; they're at least pretty good at making coffee, including somewhat elaborate drinks, and as far as Chris is aware they're all trying. That's what counts, right?

I think that's about it, except for that like... If anyone's curious, the handheld games from the arena this month are just normal games. I thought maybe they'd be some sort of weird alien-versions of them, but I guess not; I took one apart and it was all the expected stuff inside it.

That said I'm totally betting I can beat anyone's high scores.

Yeah, whole shebang. My mom bought one like it so I've used it before, but I never quite mastered the whole foaming the milk thing.

The trick is listening to it. It's a subtle thing, but there's a change in the pitch of the whistling when it's just right. I can show you - it's kinda hard to explain without doing it, y'know?

Well, it's not really magic, but it does make the difference between a good drink and great one. I had this woman one time, I made her a cappuccino, and she just wouldn't shut up about how great the foam was. Said it was the best cappuccino she ever had.

Considering most people don't even know what a real cappuccino is, I guess that wasn't too surprising.

Yeah I can't say I know exactly what a cappuccino is either other than that it involves a lot of foam. Is it when you use like, milk and brewed coffee instead of milk and espresso?

[He's not totally sure. This is a lot to remember, but it's at least a nice distraction from other things.]

But yeah, definitely want to do great and not just good; I mean, not just because that'll make Delight happier but because um... Everyone here could use great coffee.

[It's not like any of them have a lot of luxuries here, so this one is important. And it's something he can actually do to help.]

Nah, that's a café au lait you're thinking of. Cappuccino is espresso, steamed milk, and a lot of foam, more than with a latte - usually you do about a third of each in the cup. Maybe I could draw you some diagrams ... wow, did I really just say that.

[She laughs at herself, the nerdiness of what she's said.]

Yeah, good coffee is essential. It's cool that you got this out of Delight. I guess she's not so bad, huh?

[He's memorizing all this stuff though, grinning a little at how Nick rambles on about the topic. At the comment about Delight he nods, without hesitation.]

She's uh, definitely my favorite god. Really nice and considering her name's Delight I don't think we have to worry too much about her being nice when you talk to her and then turning around and doing something awful to you like Fear.

[Fear's so chill to talk to and then bam.]

[She's never had a good conversation with him, and considering he's responsible for most of the fucked-up shit that's happened to them while she's been here, her estimation of the god is pretty low.]

You think Delight could scare up some cigarettes if I asked real nice?

Yeah. I'm always like... Really worried I'm gonna say the wrong thing whenever I talk to him.

Probably; it's definitely worth asking her, though you'll probably have to trade her something.

[Fuck that guy though - Fear is by far the worst of the gods here, in Nick's opinion.]

Yeah? What did you have to trade for the coffee?

[He's pretty torn between Fear or Rage being the worst. Hope's a jerk but a well-meaning jerk, and Delight's awesome.]

She just asked us to like, provide the coffee to people. I guess everyone being happy about coffee is enough power to make it worth it to her?

I guess that's fair. It's nice that she doesn't make you do anything fucked up for it. Could you imagine what you might have to do if it was up to one of these other assholes?
