hadriel | video: still not that kind of doctor

Tomorrow afternoon, we're hosting a class on the clinic on how to stabilize an injured person and then safely move the body, in an environment where the dead come back to life and where there's no serious expectation of sophisticated medical care.

It's going to be utilitarian and potentially grimly upsetting, but I suggest anyone with any kind of a stomach for it come to the clinic for noon. If you're conservative about touch, please bring a partner who you trust to manhandle you in body-lifting exercises. Of course you're welcome to opt out of that portion of the day, if need be.

Please bring donations of any medical supplies, if you can.

If you're new to Hadriel in the last couple of months, I'm Doctor Banner, I'm one of the clinic volunteers. I'm not technically a medical doctor, but since we lost Doctor Pierce, beggars can't be choosers. We've already covered wound care, risk of infection, and stitches and suturing. I'm happy to link you to that material, go over any of it in person, or continue stitching lessons for anyone who needs a refresher. What kind of doctor are you, then?

I think I ought to learn a few more skills in healing than I have, but you're a busy man. I wouldn't take any of your time for it.

"The dead come back to life?" What, like, all of them?

No, not all of them. Some of us die permanently.

Some of us, on the other hand, are resurrected by the gods that brought us here.

That seems pretty far on the other side of science from medicine. What qualifies you to run a clinic?

[One one hand, the warnings Bruce has added onto this announcement are a little concerning, but on the other... It was only a few weeks ago that this would've been very practical, and as usual for Chris pragmatism outweighs apprehension.]

[ He makes a noise somewhere between 'gross' and 'fantastic!!' ]

What's that cost? There's a catch, right?

Burn ointment would be great. [ not for the course. Just in general. The fireflies have caused a massive depletion in the stash.

I studied the effect of gamma rays on humans, and after I left biomedical research, worked providing basic first aid and medical services in unregulated and underserviced areas overseas.

We don't know yet, is the answer. So try not to die.

We are definitely low on burn ointment.

[He agrees, glancing up from explaining death here, and smiling.]

This is grim- if we had a patient come in here tomorrow with a shattered leg- the kind of thing that'd mean surgeries, pins, x-rays, and months of suspension and then physio... I think I'd honestly just up their morphine dose to a humane point at let them come back through Hope.

Sure, I'm sure people will appreciate it. Do you know where the clinic is?

[ Her nose crinkles at that. Really, Kate rarely takes the time to appreciate how much easier - comparatively - having magical healers was. Someone who could simply roll up their sleeves and focus until the injury looked like it never existed in the first place.

Even with their limitations, such as stamina and the general rarity of healing powers, worrying about serious, human surgery was something she hadn't needed to do back home. No crisis had ever been big enough to warrant it.

(And, in general, the place was far, far better stocked than the dregs that litter the Clinic.) ]

Do we even have enough morphine for that? [ There's an almost bitter laugh in the way she asks that.

But- hm. Didn't people ask Delight to stock the bar with coffee? Could they demand more from the gods as well? ]

[ What, you mean volunteer to heal the dying and help conserve medical supplies for when they're really needed?

Nope. ]

Sometimes it's simply better to let nature take its course. The maggots of some species of fly provide some protection against infection, as well as cleaning the wound. I could show you which ones to look for.

Oh God, we don't. I'll end up knocking them unconscious and then have to smother them with a pillow.

[He says, and then puts his head in his hands, because this is horrible.]

And this is literally our best standard of medical care right now.

[He has a few words for Kate about this person and their day to day in-touchness with reality, before he manages to reconnect the feed and answer politely;]

Our access to antibiotics isn't so limited that this is where I think we should turn, but I will keep it in mind if things get worse, thank you.

[ If she was the type to do hysterical, despairing fits of laughter, that would have driven her to it. Instead, Kate presses her forehead against her knees and lets out a long breath. ]

Hate to say it - [ And she does, because she despairs at the thought of asking the assholes who brought them here for anything ] - but maybe we need to bug the gods. Mean, they're providing coffee. [ Which is very important to her life but not nearly as important as proper resources. ] Equipment might be worth a shot.

Yeah. If they have some kind of Star Trek stuff- bone regenerators. Because right now, I have all the scalpels and most of the medication I could possibly need. The problem is the nursing staff you need for that kind of recovery time, and someone with the medical knowledge to perform complex surgery. I mean, I can set a bone, but surgical plates?

[He shakes his head.]

Even Hawkeye probably wouldn't have been able to handle that, when he was here. And what would a patient do, if they were bedridden when something like those fireflies happened?

[ He musters a soft smile, which reaches his eyes, missing any kind of dismissal in that statement completely. Or perhaps just overlooking it. ]

And debridement. You know, for creatures who are so very open minded about most things, you're immensely fussy when it comes to God's creatures. You'd think there was something wrong with a little wiggling-- [ He wiggles his index finger in front of him. ] --when really they're far more effective than any doctor at keeping wounds clean.

'More effective than any doctor,' I will not grant you, I'm afraid.

[Says Bruce, who does not believe in naturalism, not even a little.]

Patient experience is an aspect of medical care not to be overlooked, and people really are sensitive about wriggling, even just a little bit of it.
