Gestures are probably better than spoken language if they've never encountered English before, but it's still not foolproof. There's a wide variance for the meaning of gestures even among those who speak the same language.

No, nothing's foolproof. We can imagine a number of hypothetical scenarios, but there are likely just as many that we don't consider. This is the value of soliciting ideas from multiple viewpoints.
