Consider the following exercise in critical thinking, if you can tear yourselves away from gossiping about each others' love lives long enough to put some actual thought into formulating an answer:

If you had never before encountered a being like yourself before - a human, for example, or however you classify yourself - what would you most want to know about these beings? What are the most important concepts that are fundamental to your existence?

I'd want to know everything! What they eat, what their life's like, what they're into, what's important to them.

And I'd want them to know my kind don't want to hurt them. That I want to get along with them. And that I need food and water and sleep and clothes... survival things!

Does it not occur to you that gossiping about each others' love lives is part of that same drive, Mello? That any and all information about the beings with whom we share this space is relevant?

People can think about multiple things at once, ya know.

That's a rather deep question to ask. Is someone having an existential crisis, perhaps? :)

Yes, Bianca, it occurred to me. I just dismissed it in the hope - futile as it seems to be - that there might be more to what drives the people here than wasting time on idle speculation about who is sleeping with who.

Actually, what I'm doing is asking a very simple, direct question, which I've noticed you are either unwilling to answer or incapable of doing so.

You don't want to go down that road.

It's a primal component of most organic creatures. Social ties are a primal, vital component of any community, organic or otherwise. I don't understand how you manage to convince yourself that your affectation of considering these things "idle" - [and Bianca makes actual airquotes with her fingers here] - is somehow laudable.

That's most people, though. [ And it's not like it's a bad thing, just a thing that is. ]

Sometimes, it's not is or isn't but when, and something like that is hard to determine with your run-of-the-mill human, let alone something entirely foreign. An immediate threat is generally pretty obvious.

It's not that difficult to understand, Bianca - I have more important priorities. Furthermore, there is one key aspect about social ties that you've overlooked - they are a liability. The easiest way to exploit someone is through a person they care about.

I'm not lying about this, Bianca, and there's nothing wrong with my perception. I see the world as it actually is - brutally violent and mostly populated with idiots. And you must think I'm deeply stupid if you think I would tell you what my priorities are. We are not friends, Bianca. In case it happened to slip your mind, you murdered me.
