Okay. I'm looking for someone to teach me how to fight. Fist-fighting, martial arts, swordfighting, guns, I don't care. I'm just sick of everyone else fighting my battles for me.

Well, yeah. Lasers. All the blasters back home work on rays and batteries. Lemme guess, you’re used to the old kind too.

Lasers. Like something outta Star Trek? Fucking hell, that's awesome. And yeah, I'm used to old fashioned guns with bullets and gunpowder and shit like that.

Star Trek? Um, yeah. Awesome, I guess. It's all I'm used to. I mean, that old fashioned stuff is kinda cool to me. Barely anyone 'round back home remembers that stuff. It's like diggin' up some relic.

voice;

They don't have Star Trek where you're from? But, mind if I ask you a question? About where you're from?

I don't know what that is, so I guess not. Is that a famous crew?

Where are you from? And what year is it there? [she pauses] I guess that's two questions.

I never heard of 'em. Maybe their story didn't make it past the war.

I call the Zones home. It used to be America before the wars. Some place out west. [Her tone becomes unsure.] Two-thousand something? I didn't keep my days marked but I guess it's at least sometime after two-thousand twenty, give or take half a decade.

voice;

...sonuvabitch. That sucks.

[takes a moment to process] Okay, no offense? But I really hope that my America doesn't turn into your America? 'Cause what you've said about it sounds fucking awful.

voice;

You can't offend me by that. Anyone would wanna change our history. [She pauses and tries the lighten the mood.] It ain't all terrible all the time. We got good music if you live long enough to find a radio.

voice;

[toiletseat_girl]

Okay, cool. 'Cause I know some people are touchy about where they came from. [she waits] Yeah, good music can make a bad day way better. Got anything from home to share?

voice;

Sorry. Didn't come here with anything but my lil' friend and the leathers on my back. I didn't have any tapes of the stuff anyway.

Nah, it's okay. It's just that I've been stuck with only four CDs from home and it's getting old.

voice;

[Her voice turns eager.] You got music to listen to?

Yeah. Tori Amos, Hole, Nirvana, and the Stone Temple Pilots. Heard of 'em?

No. But I'd like to. Are they good?

voice;

[toiletseat_girl]

Yeah, really good. Though, Tori Amos is kind of one of those singers you either like or you hate.

Ain't pretty much every singer like that? You can't really get choosy back home, but you either like it or you turn down the radio.

I guess so. It's the same back home, but that's what CDs are for. If you like a singer or a band, you can buy the CD.

Can't really do that back home. Usually just the DJs got the recordings and you have to wait for the band to throw down in a bonfire concert. If they live long enough for you to see 'em.

I take it that most people don't have long life expectancies where you're from.

Yeah, a discman and headphones.

The oldest person 'round was, like, forty and he's the only one I ever heard makin' it that long.

You don't even have to have a boombox for it? That's shiny.

Holy crap. Yeah, that's youngish by my world's standards. It's not weird to live into your eighties there.

Well, we have boomboxes, too, but the headphones make it private.

Eighties? Wow, damn. That's so old.

Guess the private stuff would throw me. Music ain't really a private thing back home. It's meant to have group listenin' with you.

It is. They get all wrinkly and creaky and they demand pudding.

We've got that, too. Like a group of friends listening to something at a party or going to a concert. [not that she would know about either of those things in person]
