Video 5 - Sewing Shop

Hello, everyone! I wanted to let you know that the Sewing Shop is open for business. Please stop by if you need your garments mended or if you need something new that you can't find in the shops. I know how hard it is to find things that fit properly there.

I'm also available to give sewing lessons should you wish to learn! It's a very useful skill to have, especially here where anything can happen.

She sounds a very sensible woman. [ Maglor smiles ]

She reminds me of the hobbit matron who tried to feed me, when I worked at her husband's inn!

She is. Unfortunately for her, she never had the chance to meet a man who would be good to me. Renly tried, but he was in love with my brother. Joffrey was a sadistic monster and she knew that it was only a matter of time before that sadism would be directed toward me. And Tommen was a sweet boy, but he was like a weathervane.

You worked at an inn? I must hear more.

Ah Margaery! I'm so glad you and Matt found each other.

[ He laughs ]

Briefly, yes! I wandered into the Shire once - I always used to play for bed and board, when I got tired of living rough. But when Mistress Celendine saw me, she basically threw up her hands in horror at my state and demanded I stay so she could feed me. One week turned into two... I stayed almost a full year, in the end.

So am I. Even though I still miss him terribly. I don't think I'll ever stop.

[she laughs brightly] Oh! I can only imagine the state you must have been in to earn that reaction. Terribly thin and bedraggled and in need of a good night's sleep in a real bed and a supper that's not cooked over a cookfire!

I don't think you'd want to, eh?

[ He smiles at her and shrugs wryly ] It had been a long hard winter, and I was very tired of scavenging! She was very good to me.

No, I wouldn't. No matter how much I miss him. It's that pain that drives me to find a way to his world.

I can only imagine. Our time after the Null invaded and Hope couldn't provide food was the only time I've really done without and I must say that I didn't care for it! I'm glad there was a kind soul there to take you in when you needed it.

As was I - I normally don't venture into populated areas except to trade for things I cannot get myself. But the Long Winter was... it was a hard year. I did not mind staying with them, and they were, and are, a people greatly concerned with the Proper Way to Do Things. [ the capitals are audible ] And they have a very great deal to say about Hospitality!

I can't even imagine. I've never been through a winter, but they say that even in the Reach, it gets cold and grey and ice falls from the skies. [she smiles] I think I would like the Hobbits, although I'm not sure what they would make of me.

Winters can be beautiful. [ He hums softly ]

But that year, the storms were harsher than normal, and they started early and went late. Illness swept through many of the villages of Men and Hobbits alike, and with the snows coming early, many of the harvests failed, so there were food shortages too. Even the beasts struggled - wolves came down into the populated lowlands for the first time in years. I don't know how the dwarves did, but they were always better prepared for such storms in their mountain strongholds. The elves too, we can endure more, at need. But it was a hard year for everyone. I went to the Shire, because I knew I would have no welcome amongst Men, that year. But Hobbits take their Hospitality very, very seriously. Even in the hard times.

[ He laughs ]

You're a 'Big Person', like me, so you'd get very suspicious looks. But I think they'd warm up to you very quickly.

The Reach is where most of Westeros gets their food from. Back home, we say that's why it's called the Reach; we give your hands something to reach for at the supper table. I can only imagine what a winter like that would do to our crops and thus to Westeros. It sounds as though your world has endured much.

Oh? Why do you say that?

Most settlements grow their own, although there is plenty of trade! And the bigger cities rely on their dependent lands. Not that different!

[ he smiles at her ]

Because you are kind and great hearted, and I think they would get along well with you.

No, not that different. Although. . . now I can't help wondering how other parts of Westeros fared during the war. The growing season is much shorter in the North and the Riverlands were scourged and burned.

[she smiles back and blushes a little]

You always know the right thing to say to make me feel . . . valued.

[ He makes a low concerned tut ]

Aye, it sounds as if it will be a bad time there. Burned lands do poorly for at least a season, usually. And war tends to befoul the soil in other ways too.

[ He smiles ]

I but speak truth!

Yes. The Riverlands used to be Westeros' second biggest provider of agricultural goods. They're now "surrendered to the crown," but I doubt that Cersei Lannister will keep their needs in mind.

[she smiles back]

In the most flattering way possible.

[ Maglor grimaces ] She doesn't sound like the sort of ruler to pay proper attention to that sort of thing, no.

[ He shakes his head ] I am almost glad you are dead, for I think those left alive in your world are in for a bad time.

[ He winks at her ]

I am a bard, I was told once it's part of the job.

Cersei only pays attention to what makes Cersei happy. And what makes Cersei happy is making others miserable and amassing more power for herself.

[she nods] I think they are, too. Daenerys Targaryen returns to Westeros to take her rightful place on the Iron Throne, but it will require yet another war to ensure she succeeds.

[she looks completely innocent]

Then it's one you perform remarkably well!

[ He shakes his head ]

'A bad business all around', as the Hobbits might say. Things will, it sounds, get much worse before they get better. [ That, he know, will rely on if this Daenerys is actually a good queen herself, which she might, or might not be ]

I do try~ [ he laughs softly ]

It seems that way. Westeros has been through enough war to last a lifetime and it has more war coming to it. [she has faith in Daenerys and faith that her grandmother will advise her well]

Really? Then please feel free to continue to try. [she teases]

War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all [ Maglor quotes ]

So said a wise man, once. But it makes it no easier for those caught up in it.

[ A smile for her ]

Why, if my lady says so, then surely I must obey.

No, no easier. But I'm hopeful that Daenerys will be able to bring an end to all of the wars and see the Seven Kingdoms united once more. Unfortunately, there will have to be a lot of death before that happens. Some will be people who have it coming, like Cersei. Others will just be. . . a moment slower than their opponent.

[she gives him a naughty little smile]

It's nice to be obeyed. I've missed it.

[ He laughs ]

I see you and Matt may have to note a few things!

Oh, that will be--different. I'll have to rely on him to navigate his world. It will likely take a while before I'm truly settled.

I'm sure you will do admirably. [ He smiles fondly ]

You did well enough here, after all! I assume Matt's world lacks the emotionally manipulative rulers, hopefully.

One would certainly hope so. Though, I'm told that his world doesn't have kings or queens. Instead, the people choose their rulers. That sounds risky to me.

Risky in some ways, but useful in others. It would, theoretically, motivate folk who wish to rule to do well, lest someone else be chosen!
